Which school district is the most honest in Kansas City? Olathe School gets kudos from me!

Article and report from Maria Antonia from KMBC:

KMBC's Maria Antonia went shopping Tuesday for the items on five school districts require their students to buy. The amounts range from $25.39 to $49.75 before taxes.

The Kansas City District's kindergartners need pay just $25.39, which was the cheapest. Next up was the Blue Valley School District at $25.85.

Slightly more expensive was a Liberty elementary school, which saw a bill totaling $29.51. Parents of kindergartners in the Independence School District should expect to pay $37.56.
And the most expensive was the Olathe School District. The cost was $49.75, but that includes a backpack.

Most districts include items like sticky notes, whiteboard markers and plastic sandwich bags on their lists. Antonia reports that districts ask for these items to help cut the costs that teachers pay out of their own pockets for classroom supplies.

My view:
After reading this article and discussing with my wife who happens to be a school teacher, I picked up on a different idea. It seems to me that the Olathe School District is the only school district that accurately reported the true cost to Maria Antonia.

If you're like me, you hate surprises. If you're hunting for school supplies, you want to start with a budget, right? Now lets say you're one of the other school districts like the Blue Valley School District and budgeted for each one of your 5 kids $25.85.

Now you get to your local store and find out that the list was incomplete and now your expenses are $49.75 per kid. That may be a big surprise to most people, right?

I reviewed the supplies list from some school districts and noticed items missing. Shouldn't the Olathe School District be commended for accurately reporting the true cost to the parents?

I give the Olathe School District kudos for being honest and accurately reporting the true supplies cost.
