How can a blind girl and my daughter get me to look at life differently?

Yesterday I was killing some time between appointments. My next appointment in the day was to help host a tour in one of our $800,000 condos down on the plaza.

Since I had 45 minutes to kill, I decided to stop by the bookstore on the Country Club Plaza. As I was coming up to the bookstore I came upon a teenage girl and a little cute puppy. The puppy came up to me and was really friendly and it kind of invited me to a little game of tag.

As I played the quick game of tag with the puppy I looked up to the girl who was holding the leash to talk to her. I noticed that the girl was missing eyes and had several scars on her face.

Not knowing what to say, I talked to the girl about her puppy. During the conversation I could tell that the girl was in pain.

I said, "I can tell why this puppy is so happy."

The girl said, "why."

I said, "because it is with such a pretty girl."

At this point I noticed a lady behind me come up close and started taking pics of the girl. Thinking the photographer was a stranger I made a comment to the photographer.

The photographer said, "you don't understand, that is my daughter."

Tears then started pouring down the moms face. After wiping the flood of tears, the mom said, "I pulled my camera out because I haven't seen my daughter smile in 4 or 5 years."

The mom said that while they are in town to visit the doctors they always stop by the plaza to visit the fountains. While we talked for a while, the mom said that the doctors found a tumor on her daughter's brain about 6 years ago. On top of many surgeries, the tumor has caused her to go blind. Around four months ago after an exploratory surgery the doctors said the tumor has gotten very aggressive and they don't give her more than 6 months to live.

I'm ok with my math and I was thinking if the doctors gave this girl 6 months to live 4 months ago, this girl doesn't have much time.

The mom said, "Every morning she wakes up wandering if her daughter made it through the evening. Somehow, it will be easier knowing that I got to see her smile on such a beautiful day."

Nightly my daughter and I tell stories about our day. Last night was no exception and of course I told my daughter, Cassie, this story. As I was telling Cassie the story, I noticed that she was smiling. Confused because I thought she would be sad, I asked Cassie why she was smiling and not sad regarding this sad story.

Cassie said, "Daddy, of all of the people to meet in the world, some how they picked the best person to meet. You can make anyone smile. I'm happy that you got that girl to smile and that her mommy got to see it." Just then Cassie had a magical twinkle in her eye. The kind that makes me melt.

Yep, leave it to my daughter to point out the obvious. While I spent the time on my tour thinking about the pain the girl was in and knowing she was about to die, I should have been thinking about the happiness she was feeling when she smiled.

How do you see things in life?

Do your part and make people smile.

What does Kansas City have that most cities would love to have?

What title does Kansas City have that most cities would love to have?

Some people would say "Best Barbecue". And most would agree that Kansas City is #1 here.

Others would say "Most Fountains". Outside of Rome, Kansas City is #1 with the most fountains.

If you said "Best Architecture Firms". You wouldn't be far off. Did you know that some of the most sought after architecture firms are from Kansas City?

If you're an outdoor lover, you would say "Most Parks". The fact is Kansas City developed the first master-plan city park system. Kansas City is full of parks and still boasts one of the largest parks in the nation.

If you're an entrepreneur you would probably say, "Its entrepreneurial spirit." The late Ewing Marion Kauffman not only brought Major League Baseball to Kansas City, but he also started the Kauffman Foundation. The Kauffman Foundation is often referred as the "World's Largest Foundation Devoted to Entrepreneurship".

If you have read a recent government report you would probably say that Kansas City boast one of the "most productive work forces in the nation".

Many people would argue that Kansas City is the "Best Little Big City" in the nation.
Kansas City has a NASCAR race track.
A pro football team.
A pro baseball team.
A pro soccer team
A top notch performing arts venue like the Kauffam Center for Preforming Arts
A World Class Museum like the Nelson Atkins Museum.
And an improved zoo.

I don't think you would be off if you even said that most would love to be like Kansas City because we're in the "Center of the U.S.", our "Rich History", our "Jazz and Blues", or our "Sweet Personality of its Residents".

You could find some great data supporting all of these claims and titles.

These are all great answers.

If you have said anyone of these answers you would probably be correct most of the time.

But none of those are the #1 title that most cities would love to have. Any more guesses?

So what is the #1 title that Kansas City has that most cities would love to have, you ask?

The world would love to have the "Technology War Title". Yep, if you didn't know it, there is a technology war going on here in our backyards.

Think about it. We once had one large mobile phone company in Kansas City called Sprint. In fact, it was headquartered in a large nearly 4 million square foot office park. Supposedly the largest single company office park in the nation.

Then Kansas City had a couple companies called Garmin and Cerner pop up.

Now we have the big tech companies in our backyards. That is right. Apple, Microsoft and Google have all decided to have a physical presence in Kansas City and I don't mean just selling us Kansas Citians products over the internet or through a Best Buy or Microcenter store. I mean they have actually opened up stores. How many cities can say that they have all three of the power technology companies in their cities?

Apple opened a store. Then another store. Yep, we have two stores in Kansas City. A few cities can say they have an Apple store, but few can say they have two Apple stores.
Apple Store

Training Room in the Microsoft Store at the Oak Park Mall
Located in a suburban Kansas City mall, Microsoft opened its 20th store in the nation in the biggest and probably best shopping mall outside of the Mall of America. With 23 stores nationwide, Kansas City is in a lucky group.

Sure, Apple and Microsoft having a presence in the same city is a big deal, but add Google into the picture and this is truly amazing.

Not to be outdone, Google chose Kansas City out of 19,429 U.S. cities to to install their first Google Fiber service. That is like you personally winning a 300 million dollar power ball ticket. Not only is the Google Fiber service amazing, it will be delivered to households at a very reasonable price. Like a third of the cost of Verizon's fiber with like 3 times more service.

The service is so amazing I have seen representatives from Microsoft, Apple, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner; as well as, a host of other technology companies at technology conferences hosted by Google. These reps are BUG EYED as they learn about Google's plans for Kansas City.

The tech world and people outside of Kansas City would really like to have the tech battle that is brewing in Kansas City in their backyards. I hope the people from Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri understand how big this is before the September 9th deadline comes.

Kansas City is changing and making some history. Will you be a part of it?

If you live in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, you need to see what all of the talk is about.
Checkout Google Fiber.

Lets do this for Kansas City.

Don't worry if you live in the suburbs like me, if it catches on, it will get to us.

If you would like to see how Google can help your business, consider attending the next Google Business Seminar.

In the meantime, I'll post more about the technology war in future post. I

Google is the New Walmart for Small Businesses

Google is the New Walmart for Small Businesses

When Walmart comes into town, it kind of wipes out stores that market price conscious commodities. What are they?

Examples of price conscious commodity stores are bike stores, toy stores, grocery stores, and garden centers.

Seth Godin, an author, recognized the Walmart phenomena and introduced to the marketing world the Purple Cow. A brief description of the Purple Cow goes like this. If you are driving down the highway and see a brown cow, you think "Big wiz" because you see brown cows all of the time. But what happens if you see a "Purple Cow" you think, that is cool, right? It sticks into your head. The Purple Cow theory is you need to be remarkable and stand out to compete.

The successful companies that competed against Walmart found out that they needed to be remarkable in order to stay in business They needed to be the "Purple Cow". The most obvious way for them to stay in business was offer outstanding service whether it was offer knowledge during the sale process or extra packaging with a handwritten "Thank You Note" after the sale. Service is the "Purple Cow" for small business.

Now the successful companies have weathered the Walmart storm and thought they had it figured it out and here comes Google.

Now your thinking, how is Google with all of its services for small businesses hurting small businesses, right?

Simply with its Small Business Package like Google Offers and Google Local, Google is changing how small businesses market. If used right, the services are great for small businesses. Unfortunately, most small businesses are using the Google services wrong.

First, most small business are not taking advantage of Google Offer like the big businesses. Consumers who use the Offers typically only see offers from Big Businesses.

Next when it comes to Google Local, most small businesses are not completing their profile and managing their profile. Why is this important? Most internet users use Google over the Yellow Pages to find a business.

So why do you need to monitor if I have a presence on Google Local?

First, your profile, which is tied to Google Search and Google Plus will need periodic updates.

Second, you need to monitor what your customers are saying about your business. Here are some random reviews:

So how is Google like Walmart?

Google Local makes it easier for consumers to post reviews about your small business. Just like when Walmart came to town, small businesses need to be remarkable or consumers will shop by price which will benefit large businesses like Walmart.

If you are not remarkable, your customer will be disappointed and will shop somewhere else. With Google Local they will take their friends and your future customers with them.

Be remarkable and consumers will make remarkable reviews.

I'm surprised at how many businesses in Kansas City don't have a presence on Google Local and do not monitor what their customers are saying.

Do you have a Google Local presence and monitor what your customers are saying?
