How do school districts in Kansas City determine whether to cancel school due to snow?

Living in Kansas most all of my life I often get asked how do the Kansas City school districts determine to cancel school due to snow. I have driven on Kansas and Missouri side roads during snow days and I see very little difference in them.

I'll do my best to help you understand how the Kansas City School Districts cancel school on a snow day.

First, the Kansas and Missouri School District administrators have a different process.

The Missouri School District administrators kind of have a triathlon on a snow day.

They first clean off their driveways.

Then they head to the bus stop and stand for 20 minutes just like the kidos do from their school district.

After standing at the bus stop. the administrators drive their cars to the school district offices.

If the Missouri School administrator can't get to the school district offices by 5:00 AM, schools are canceled. They make the necessary calls to cancel school.

The Kansas School Administrators handle snow days much different.

The Kansas School District administrators start the morning by watching the news and seeing if another Kansas School District has canceled school. If none of the other Kansas School Districts have canceled, they implement their snow day plan.

The Kansas School Districts Snow Day Plan starts by looking out the window and surfing on the web (I'll tell you what the Kansas School District administrator is surfing later).

Next on the Snow Day Plan is calling the school maintenance employees and have them test the roads in their vehicles. The maintenance workers drive their beefed up four wheel drive vehicles through the snow to the schools.

Once the maintenance workers make it to school they are instructed to clean off the circle drives in their cozy newer four wheeled drive trucks.

If the maintenance workers can't completely clean off the circle drive by 7:15, the workers call the Kansas School District administrator.

By the time the Kansas School District Administrator receive the call from the maintenance workers they are on the plane south that they booked while looking out the window first thing in the morning. As they look out the window from their plane, they make the necessary phone calls to cancel school.
So if your wondered why the Missouri School Districts have more snow days hopefully this helps. The Missouri School Administrators understand what a typical family go through. They understand it takes more than 10 minutes to clean off the driveway and sidewalks. They understand that it is cold at the bus stops. In addition they understand that not all families have SUV's and have no problems driving on ice and snow.

Disclosure: This is my interpretation of how the school administrators cancel school.
