Despite Rise in DUI-Related Deaths, MADD Gives Kansas a Five Star Rating

Despite a rise in DUI-related deaths, Motthers Against Drunk Driving recently announced this week that they had bestowed a 5 star rating for DUI countermeasures on the state of Kansas. Kansas is one of five states receiving this honor. The rating is based on Kansas laws requiring breath interlock devices for all convicted drunk drivers, operating sobriety checkpoints, escalating penalties for driving while intoxicated with children in the car, using "no refusal" methods of apprehending suspected drunk drivers, and revoking licenses through administrative processes.

Missouri earned three stars and doesn't mandate interlock devices after one DUI or have harsher penalties for DUIs with children present.
The other four states receiving the five star ranking are Arizona, Illinois, Nebraska and Utah.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Kansas saw a rise in DUI-related deaths between 2006 and 2009.
