Register of Deeds Found 26,000 fraudulent mortgage documents

John O'Brien, the South Essec County Register of Deeds says, “I can’t look a constituent in the eye and tell them who owns their mortgage." 


The Register of Deeds of South Essex County, a Massachusetts County, made this comment because his department has found 26,000 fraudulent mortgage documents on record in his area of jurisdiction. John O’Brien accuses lenders of “filing fraudulent documents to take homes away from homeowners.”


The Register of Deeds looked into it because the Massachusetts Attorney General is taking legal action against 5 of the largest mortgage banks for fraudulent foreclosures.
