Things to Do in Kansas City this weekend . . .

Things to Do in Kansas City this weekend . . .

‘Rock of Ages’ | Today through Sunday
Fans of ’80s hair bands finally have a Broadway show to call their own. The Tony-nominated “Rock of Ages” tells the story of a small-town girl and a big-city rocker who “fell in love to the greatest songs of the ’80s.” The show is full of music from bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister, Poison and Whitesnake, and it stars “American Idol” finalist Constantine Maroulis. The New York Times called it “a seriously silly, absurdly enjoyable arena-rock musical,” even though its endless guitar solos “are tethered to a thin plot concocted from showbiz clichés.” The show is at the Music Hall, 13th Street and Central Avenue. Tickets are $46-$69.20 at www.ticketmaster.com.
Mother’s Day 5k Run/Walk for Women | Sunday
More than 4,000 women and girls are expected for this annual event, which is hosted by Kansas City Express, a running and walking club for women. It starts at 8 a.m. at Corporate Woods Building 40, 9401 Indian Creek Parkway in Overland Park. Advanced registration is required at Dick’s Sporting Goods, 11801 Nall Ave., Leawood. Stop by 4-9 p.m. Friday or 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday. The race costs $30 for adults, $25 for girls 18 and younger. A portion of race fees will benefit the American Heart Association. Details atMothersDayRun.com.
Food Truck Friday | Friday
The food trucks and their colorful owners featured in last Sunday’s Star Magazine (go to www.kansascity.com/living) will host Food Truck Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in The Star parking lot at 18th and McGee streets. Vendors include Port Fonda, Indios Carbonsitos, CoffeeCakeKC, Good You, Magical Meatball Tour, 3 Girls Cupcakes and the Roasterie. Admission is free; just bring cash or credit cards to buy food and drink.
Cinco de Mayo | Friday through Sunday
Celebrate Mexican heritage with three days of music, dancing, food, rides and art at Guadalupe Centers, 1015 Avenida Cesar E. Chavez. Events include a dance from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday (admission is $2 for ages 13 and up) and a farmers market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Details, GuadalupeCenters.org.
Flower Power | Saturday
This year’s Farm to Table Celebration series at City Market kicks off with Flower Power, offering a wide selection of bedding plants, hanging baskets, flowering shrubs, perennials and annuals. Experts will offer tips on planting. The event runs from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Details, www.thecitymarket.org.
