Merlin Entertainments is snapping up the chance to open a $15 million Legoland Discovery Center at Crown Center in Kansas City.
The attraction will be adjacent to the entertainment company’s planned $15 million Sea Life aquarium, which was announced in February.
The Kansas City attraction will be the fourth Legoland in the country and marks a significant play in the Kansas City market for Merlin, which claims to operate attractions that draw more than 30 million visitors worldwide.
“They were so impressed with Kansas City after reviewing the area when they made the Sea Life deal, so it’s a totally new addition,” said Jerry White, senior retail adviser for Colliers International. White has represented Merlin as it expands into the Kansas City market.
Glenn Earlam, managing director of Merlin’s Midway Attractions Operating Group, said Crown Center’s true mixed-use development is a prime attraction.
“The Legoland Discovery Center concept is already successful in both Europe and elsewhere in the USA, and I know people will love it here,” he said in a release. “North America is a very important development market for Merlin, and we believe that Kansas City, and particularly Crown Center, is a great location for us.”
The Legoland center will be geared toward families with children ages 3 to 10 and will feature an interactive and educational two- to three-hour indoor experience.
According to Kansas City Business Journal archives, efforts have been afoot for more than five years to bring a Legoland attraction to the region. Developers have unsuccessfully proposed Legoland-anchored retail attractions in Olathe and Lee’s Summit.
Sea Life and Legoland Discovery Center will occupy the first two floors of Halls department store; Halls has consolidated into the third level of the Crown Center Shops.
The cost of attending Legoland at Crown Center has not been established.
Both attractions are slated to open in the first half of 2012, with construction beginning this month.

Martin - thanks for posting this! I am soooooo excited! I really wanted Lego Land - just not in Lee's Summit. Crown Center is perfect with Kaleidescope and Union Station there already. YAY! I can hardly wait to take my son.
