$50 bucks.
That’s the supplies reimbursement amount for the average teacher in Johnson County.
That’s pitiful.
The rest of the expense for supplies comes from your teacher’s wallet. For an average first year teacher that is 2 months salary. Didn’t know they made so much money? Neither did I!
Borders developed a way for you to help your local teacher. On December 4th & 5th, stop by, buy a Latte, tea, cd or book and receive a gift certificate for DonorChoose.org. Then next week choose your favorite teacher and donate the gift certificate to their cause. For more information, go to: http://ht.ly/3jo02.

My wife has been a school teacher for over 15 years. She has seen many changes in education. The biggest changes recently have been the diminishing school budget and the “No Child Left Behind” program. Both have value, yet have produced a heavy burden on school teachers. Although school districts provide the basic functions and a few high tech tools for the classroom, the rest of the expenses come from the teachers.
You know them, generally helpful people that we count on to deliver education to our children. That education moves our children, inspires our children to grow, love, laugh....
Do you know where the money comes from for decorating the classrooms, providing extra reading books, cabinets for the kids, gadgets to help shorten the gap between high functioning kids and lower functioning kids, recognition awards, and science experiment supplies comes from? Sure the school districts provide around $50 per school year. The PTA pitches in another $25-150 (depending on how strong the PTA is that year). The remaining amount comes from the teachers salary. For a typical first year teacher that is 2 months salary..
I know teachers like my wife would greatly appreciate it. As a science teacher and having a wide range of functioning kids in her classroom, her cause is a couple of high tech gadgets to help our children grow. Right now her classroom has 1 computer to share between 23 students. From what I hear, that is typical. If you don’t have a favorite teacher, feel free to support her classroom.
When you go to DonorsChoose.org, search your classroom by going to:
1-State: Kansas
2-City: Olathe
3-School: Brougham
4-Teacher (as an example, Mrs. Chris Dowell). Her Cause has been approved on DonorsChoose.org but will not be on the website until next week.
Piece of cake!
For everyone who donates on DonorChoose.org and becomes a fan of my Facebook Fan page, Kansas City Real Estate Network, in December, they will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to the Bonefish Grill.
