Fire Department Let Home Burn Due To Homeowner Not Paying $75 Fee

Here is the story: A homeowner in Obion County call a fire dispatcher to report a fire in his home. Upon calling, he was informed by the dispatcher that he had not paid the $75 yearly fee for fire protection.

The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn’t do anything to stop his house from burning.

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay.

The mayor said if homeowners don’t pay, they’re out of luck.

My question how did the fire department know that no one was in the house and getting burned to death?

With nearly 50% of all home fires resulting from arson this brings to a second question.
My second question is, how does the county and insurance industry investigate arson cases on a home when they haven't paid the $75 yearly fee?

RE/MAX sells more homes than any other real estate company.
