Johnson County man loses nearly $100,000

Woman Faces Charges For Stealing Johnson County Elderly Man's Money:

A woman who prosecutors said was hired to care for a 79-year-old man was in Johnson County court on Wednesday accused of stealing up to $100,000 from the victim over the past three years.

Sylvia Stanford was charged with felony mistreatment of a dependent adult. Court documents said she was the caretaker for Alfred E. Talley and that she took advantage of him, stealing his money.

"What's sad is, many times in cases like this, their entire savings is gone, leaving the person homeless," said District Attorney Steve Howe.

Steve Howe also said that cases like this are increasing and it is probably a sign of the times.

Surely someone out there has an idea to protect dependent adults like this. I wonder if dependent care can be taken care of by the care givers but the finances by a financing company, book keeper or accountant?

It makes sense to me and we would probably hear less of these cases. Something needs to be done. I can't imagine this not having a huge affect on these dependent people and probably destroying them emotionally and financially.
