Sea Creatures are Causing Problems - Millions of Dollars added to Real Estate Construction Projects
The New Your Times reported that the New York Harbor has cleaner water.
Before you rejoice, read on.
The cleaner water has created problems. Two sea creatures –gribbles and shipworms– have made it back to the New York Harbor. The sea creatures are eating the wooden pilings supporting several new waterfront parks that are under construction, most notably Brooklyn Bridge Park.
You would think that solving the problem would be simple. But I guess nothing is simple with these sea creatures. So far, mitigating the problem has added several millions to construction projects.
Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe is quoted in the piece, pointing to the irony of the situation: “We literally have a clean harbor, but it’s causing incredible devastation to the physical infrastructure of the waterfront, and it’s costly to repair and replace.”
Every action has a reaction.
