Kansas City Home Buyer Finds it Difficult to Rent a Trailer - U-Haul will not rent trailers to people driving Ford Explorers


A couple months ago I helped a young couple moving from an Overland Park apartment buy a home in Olathe, Kansas.


Their home buying experience was a pleasant experience until the end. They had closed on their new Olathe home. Filled with smiles and excitement they headed to the local Olathe U-Haul to get a start on the moving process before a few friends came over to help.


When they got to the Olathe U-Haul, they found out that the trailer they had reserved was not available to them. It wasn't because U-Haul had overbooked the trailer or it wasn't working. Apparently U-Haul will not rent trailers to individuals who drive Ford Explorers. 


Here is the statement that my young home buyers were directed to:  


"U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations. This policy is not related to safety issues. This is an unusual circumstance for U-Haul – we have built our success for over 60 years by saying 'yes' to our customers. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are committed to working with our customers to find alternative options to help with their move." 


Luckily, my young couple listened to me and had a backup plan. He dad had a F-150 that they borrowed and they were able to meet their friends on time and complete their move that evening.


After everything was over, it was probably a good thing that the U-Haul rep would not rent my young home buyers the trailer, if the Ford Explorer is really suspectable to problems. After buying a home in Olathe, my young home buyers did not need to shell out any money soon to fix their newer Ford Explorer.
