Just as Winter Approaches, Heating Prices to Jump 10% in Kansas City
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) Expects Heating Prices to jump 10% this year, on average. That’s nearly $1,000 more than in 2009[1]. Although using natural gas to heat your Kansas City home will lower that cost, the 8.2 million homeowners still dependent on oil due to lack of renovation options or a lack of natural gas options are concentrated mainly in Northeast parts of the United States, where the winters hit the hardest.
“There are no gas lines in some older Northeastern cities,” explains Neil Gamson, EIA economist and forecaster. Furthermore, aid programs for struggling homeowners have been slashed by 47 percent, making this winter’s outlook bleaker than ever for many.
Across the country, citizens and local politicians are banding together to demand more and better aid for homeowners who cannot make the switch to natural gas and who are simply unable to afford the cost of minimal heating[2]. In the past, programs like the federal government’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) have subsidized these households, but this year the income requirements have been lowered and many who used to qualify will not.
