Johnson County Museum Moves From Shawnee to the City of Overland Park

News that the Johnson County Museum is being moved its current 20,000 SF building in Shawnee to a 70,000 SF building in Overland Park is good news for the museum, which will gain much additional space.
It’s good news for Overland Park, which will find a new use for the old 70,000 SF King Louie West ice rink, an empty property at 8788 Metcalf Ave. The ice skating rink closed in 2007 and the bowling alley closed in 2009.
Shawnee officials, however, voiced disappointment Monday night in the County Commission’s decision. The county has announced plans to spend $2 million to buy the building and $1.6 million to stabilize it until the site is transformed into the museum’s future home and National Museum of Suburbia.
The Johnson County Museum has developed a long-range master plan to increase its space needs and to grow into a national museum one phase at a time. Future plans for the building may include developing a National Museum of Suburbia and a Suburban Policy Forum.
