Earth Should Pass the Meteor Shower, the Quadrantids, Next Week - Checkout a List of other Meteor Showers For 2012
One of the most-active meteor showers should peak this coming Tuesday night into the early Wednesday morning. The meteor shower should have an estimated 40-100 meteors per hour.
Peak of Perseid Meteor Shower on August 12th |
The peak lasts only for a few hours and comes near 11:00 Tuesday night, central time. Viewing should come between when the moon sets on Tuesday night and when it comes back up Wednesday morning. Sporadic meteors may be seen a few days before and after the peak.
Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris shed by comets or asteroids. The meteor showers are usually named for the constellation from which they appear to radiate from.
This meteor shower is called the Quadrantids and is named for a constellation that no longer exists. The constellation was called the Quadrans Muralis, or wall quadrant. The wall quadrant was an instrument used by early astronomers to measure sky positions.
Quadrans Muralis was a group of stars located near the Big Dipper's handle.
Meteor showers are best observed in a dark setting away from the city lights with the naked eye. Meteors can be seen anywhere in the sky, though they may seem to radiate from the northeastern sky.
Other meteor showers peaking this year are:
