Business people are so caught up in ROI and quick to get rid of items with no ROI. Not everything has ROI.

"At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And with steam, you can power a train."

S.L. Parker, Motivational author

We've all watched a pot of water at one point or another in our lives. At 211 degrees nothing much happens. A second later we turn our head to turn our attention elsewhere and suddenly, a bubbling and steamy boil.

Keep the idea of a pot of water front and center in your mind when it comes to your business. As S.L. Parker says in his quote, it's a one degree difference that turns hot water into steam. While you may not be able to see the effects of the "heat" you're putting into your business, place a little faith in the idea that everything can change in an instant. The moment you decide to give attention elsewhere, is the moment that your path could change.

This is especially true of your efforts in social media and online marketing. Much stock is given to the idea that in the digital age we can track every click, understand the source of every lead, and "drill down" into our metrics to tell us what the magic formula is to make that one-degree difference. Business people are so caught up in ROI and quick to get rid of items with no ROI. Not everything has ROI.

What is the ROI of your mobile phone? How about the ROI of your car?

See not everything has a ROI in our business.

The online world of social media is much like your mobile phone. Social media doesn’t necessarily have an ROI. It can, but sometimes it will not. Many people manage their social media like the watching a pot that never boils. You should spend more time building the fire and less time taking the temperature. Don't try and evaluate every post or update. You'll know when you've crossed the crucial degree. Steam will rise. You won't be able to miss the boil or point where social media will start delivering a ROI.

Keep in mind that while YOU shouldn’t evaluate each post separately, your audience, your friends, your contacts....Take it all into account.

The thing about Social Media is that communication is permanent. It’s all kept somewhere on a server, waiting to be found be anyone with curiosity, or the odd search engine. So while you shouldn’t worry about every single post, you should be posting, commenting, with a strategy....with intention.

Your public persona reveals itself through your humor, openness, stance on community issues, even your pictures. Your character matters.

All of this goes into the boiling and steaming water....ready to boil. A client, a friend, friend of a friend....reading what you post, looking at your pictures, sees your comments, laughing with you online...sees you through all of those channels, and decides you have what it takes to help.

While you weren’t paying any attention, just being yourself, having a little fun....BOOM....It’s boiling!

In order to network and preform SEO task more efficiently on Google Plus, I recommend doing the following 7 steps:

I have jumped on the Google Plus bandwagon. The SEO and networking benefits trumps all other social media sites.

I have heard many people complain that they aren't seeing the benefits. After looking at many Google Plus Profiles and post, I'm confident that many people on Google Plus are expecting rewards off of incomplete Google Plus Profile.

In order to network and preform SEO task more efficiently on Google Plus, I recommend doing the following 7 steps:

Step 1 is add pictures on your profile. You can go to your profile and click edit and add one profile picture and 5 additional pics above your profile.

Step 2 is add an introduction. Profiles without introductions are like people going to networking events and hanging out in the corner. Add a complete introduction. To give it some SEO value, add keywords describing your business, hobbies and interest.

Step 3 is add a Tag Line. By adding a tag line you make it easier for people to determine what circle friends will add you to. For an SEO value, add keywords that describe your business, interest or hobby.

Step 4 is add your Occupation and Employment information. Some networking partners will search by occupation and employment information. By adding this information, you will make it easier for networking partners to find you.

Step 5 is add a few Profile and Recommended Links. By adding links you make it easier for networking partners to connect with on other social media sites. In addition, add your website and blog links.

Step 6 is add Places you Have Lived. I have had several networking partners connect with me due to where I live.

Step 7 is make your Profile Search Visible. Go to the bottom of your profile while you're in edit mode and click the box that will enable your profile to be visible.

To get started with these seven steps go to your profile page and click the edit button on the top.
When you are in the edit mode you will see the Finish Editing Tab on your profile screen similar to:

By implementing these seven steps you will help increase your networking partnerships and SEO benefits on Google Plus.

To get started networking on Google Plus, lets connect. Visit my profile at Chris Dowell on Google Plus.

You're Invited to the Kansas City Social Media Breakfast in August

In my experience with hundreds of students, the
number one reason they don't achieve success
faster is because they're unfocused and confused.

They bounce around from one event or course to the next learning opportunity
never giving any of them a chance to really work.
They always feel like the ONE piece of information
that's missing is at the next learning opportunity.

Sound like anyone you know?

Here's the good news, mastering social media isn't
that hard. It isn't brain surgery. All you need to
do is focus on one strategy and give that one
strategy your full attention and devotion and you'll
finally see the returns.

This month’s social media breakfast we’ll feature Gail Keller. We’ll help create a social media strategy for her business right here in Kansas City. You may have heard of http://www.gailsscoop.com/ . It is a newsletter developed by Gail Keller.

Gail will present her social media obstacles. As a group, we’ll work on a plan to help Gail overcome her obstacles. Obstacles she looking to overcome are:
1) Should she use social media to promote her newsletter
2) How can she create traffic to her newsletter
3) How can she use social media effectively without wasting time
4) How can she use social media to network

Gail is looking to generate a revenue from her newsletter by creating readers. Gail is interested in promoting her newsletter.

Does this sound like you?
Do you have a business that you are looking to promote?
How about more traffic to your website?
Would you benefit from communicating and networking on social media?

You can take bits and pieces of the social media strategy discussed in the Kansas City Social Media Breakfast and apply it to your business.
